This video was extremely interesting. It really explained the correct origin of some foods that are commonly associated with other incorrect locations. This video highlighted many foods that are commonly thought to be American foods. Bagels which are a common American breakfast item that many people think of coming from New York are actually an imported Jewish bread item. Another common American breakfast item, the doughnut, is actually Danish. What could be more American than a tall glass of milk and a plate of cookies? Well, wrong again; cookies are actually a Dutch invention. Corn bread is a staple of the cuisine of the American South, but corn bread actually originated with the Native Americans. Many Americans would probably also be surprised to know that hot dogs and hamburgers are credited to the Germans. That is something to think about next summer when you fire up that grill for your next barbeque cookout. Getting back to the American South, a few other foods are commonly thought of such as coleslaw and potato salad; actually English and German inventions. The next time you visit New Orleans to get a bowl of Gumbo with that excellent okra, you might want to start thinking of Africa. Also, what American child does not like bologna on a sandwich? Well, that bologna is actually Italian. What is more American than apple pie? As it turns out, probably just about everything since it originated in England according to this video. There are also many foods considered to come from other countries that are actually incorrect in their origin. One of these items is French toast; this was actually a way to use old bread by many cultures and is not really French at all. French fries also are not French. As for the foods that I would have thought come from my cultural heritage but actually came from another place I cannot really pin-point. My cultural heritage mainly rest in Poland, a country that the video didn’t spend too much time discussing. However, there are many foods that were discussed that I am sure that people with that particular cultural heritage would be surprised to find out that the food did not originate elsewhere. Some of these foods include sherbet (Asian) and ice cream (French). It was extremely interesting to learn the origin of food items. This really breaks down some stereotypes associated with food.
