The first website I found was http://www.indians.org/articles/native-americanfood. html. This website was about the staple foods that Native Americans consumed and their resourcefulness in relation to food. The three main staples were corn, squash, and beans. In addition to their main staple foods they had many other foods available to them such as greens, Deer meat, pumpkin, and wild rice. Native Americans were very resourceful with their foods. They were able to utilize the foods available in many different applications. Beside the staple foods and animal sources available, Native Americans also frequently used herbs. The herbs they used not only served as food resources but they were also used medicinally.
The second website I viewed was posted by Travis Strege and can be located at www.saskschools.ca/~avonlea2/grass3/grade56/foodkb.htm. This website focuses on the foods of the Sioux Indians. The Sioux Indians’ diet mainly consisted of meat, but also included many wild fruits, nuts, potatoes, turnips, and berries. Hunting for meat was a strenuous and difficult task. In order for the hunter to regain his energy after he has killed his preys he often at the raw liver of the dead animal. This would give the hunter the energy to take the carcass back to the tribe. The main animal the Sioux hunted was the buffalo. The buffalo provided a lot of meat since the average buffalo weighs about twice as much as the average cow. The Sioux tribe used the buffalo in many different ways and never wasted any part of the animal. They were also very innovative in their ability to dry their meat for future storage or for sustenance for long journeys.
The final website I visited was posted by Paula Kim. This website can be visited at http://www.cookingpost.com/. This website talks about the food of Native American tribes. Also listed on this website are recipes. The recipe section shows the application of many common Native American ingredients. The sections are divided into blue corn, breads, desserts, main dishes, and vegetables. Blue corn was an ingredient widely used in Native American culture. Blue corn could be used to make tortillas or to process flour. The desserts section contains recipes that commonly use corn, pumpkin, and honey. Honey in particular was a favorite sweet treat of Native Americans. The vegetable section, as you may expect, includes many recipes using the main Native American staple of squash.
